Getting help
Who can MEG help?
Refugees, asylum seekers, migrants and local people in need. Everyone is welcome, whatever their race, culture or religion.
Do I have to pay?
No. All MEG services are free.
Do I need to speak English?
No. Staff and volunteers speak many languages and we can arrange an interpreter.
Do I need a referral?
No. You can contact us yourself. Professionals can also refer people using our referral form.
Is what I tell you confidential?
Yes. We only share information with your permission, unless someone is at risk of serious harm.
Do you give immigration or legal advice?
No. We help you understand your situation and refer you to regulated immigration advisers and legal services.
What should I do in an emergency?
Call 999. If you cannot speak, call 999 from a mobile and press 55. For urgent medical help call NHS 111.
Classes and activities
Does MEG run free English (ESOL) classes?
Yes. MEG runs free weekly ESOL and maths classes for adults, from complete beginners upwards.
Are there computer classes?
Yes. Free beginner IT classes cover email, Word, Excel, staying safe online and job applications.
Can children come to activities?
Some sessions, such as parenting groups and community events, welcome children. Ask us when you book.

Food and essentials
Does MEG have a food bank?
Yes. MEG runs an African food bank and drop-ins with free tea and coffee. No referral is needed.
Can I get free clothes or furniture?
Yes. MEG gives donated clothes, shoes, bags, furniture, books and toys free to people in need.
Volunteering
How do I volunteer with MEG?
Fill in the volunteer form on our Volunteer page. We will invite you for a friendly chat, ask for references and arrange training.
Do I need a DBS check?
Only for roles working with children or adults at risk. MEG arranges and pays for it.
How much time do I need to give?
Most volunteers give 2 to 4 hours a week. Some roles are one-off, such as events.
Donating
How can I donate to MEG?
Donate online, by standing order, or give food, new clothes, shoes or laptops. See our Donate page.
Can MEG claim Gift Aid?
Yes. If you are a UK taxpayer, Gift Aid adds 25p to every £1 you give at no extra cost to you.
What food does MEG need?
Long-life milk, flour, chapatti flour, sugar, tea bags, tinned tomatoes, soup, beans, tuna, rice, dried pulses, spices, cleaning products and toiletries.

Is MEG a registered charity?
Yes. Migrant Empowerment Group is registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, number 1183705.
When was MEG founded?
MEG was set up in July 2013 in the West Midlands.
What is MEG’s mission?
To provide services, develop programmes, and empower and advocate for migrant and local people in need, regardless of race, culture or religion.
Does MEG work outside the UK?
Yes. MEG supports displaced and vulnerable people in Cameroon, including in Douala, Yaoundé, Buea, Bamenda and Dschang.
